Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the more frequently asked questions asked by our customers.

Are the services offered by the International Centre for Kinase Profiling (ICKP) only for academic institutes?
The ICKP’s services are open to ALL entities -- both for-profit and non-profit.  We welcome you to view all our services here or contact us at kinase-screen@dundee.ac.uk to learn more.

Can I get an official quotation?
Often an institute/company may need a more official quotation of the services requested for accounting purposes.  After you have identified these and discussed with us all the parameters of the study design, we can easily draw up a quote for you.

Can I Pay By Credit Card?
Although we prefer payment by purchase order, the ICKP can accept payment by credit cards.  Please contact us to obtain a credit card payment form.

Can I Speak To Someone About Custom Panel Choice?
The ICKP is housed within the MRC Protein Phosphorylation & Ubiquitylation Unit, home to the world’s leading experts on kinases and phosphorylation. if further guidance is needed -- if you are new to this field or would just like advice from another scientist -- we can help you liaise with a resident expert.

Overarching SERVICE AGREEMENT (For-Profit Only)
An Overarching Service agreement must be signed by the customer and returned to ICKP for signature before any profiling work can commence.  This is for first time For-Profit organisations.  Subsequent collaborations will only necessitate the completion of a short appendix to the Overarching Agreement.

Overarching Services Agreement

What is your policy around confidentiality and Intellectual Property (IP)?
Dundee agrees to treat any Compounds supplied in the course of providing the Service, as well as any Results produced, as confidential and the exclusive property of the Institution and agrees not to disclose any information or distribute any Results to any third party.

Dundee shall restrict access to the Compounds and the Results to its employees whose knowledge of the same is essential for the performance of the Service.  Dundee agrees that, at the Institution’s request, it shall return to the Institution or destroy all the confidential information in Dundee’s possession or control in documentary form and any of the Institution’s Compounds, and will return or destroy any documentary copies thereof made by Dundee, its director’s officers or employees, except that Dundee may retain one copy of the Confidential Information in its legal files, subject to the continuing obligation of nondisclosure and non-use.

At what concentration should I assay my compound?
Given that each compound can differ in its selectivity and potency, there is no ‘standard’ concentration that can be applied for all assays.  Each one is case-by-case.   If the compound has never been examined before, a good starting point is to include more than one different concentration of your compound of interest to be screened against  your enzyme panel of interest.

How do I submit compounds?
Please review the submission guidelines for each individual service :

How much compound should I submit?

Can I send my compound dissolved as an aqueous solution?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept compounds that are in aqueous form.  All liquid compounds must be soluble in 100% Dimethyl Sulfoxide.

How long will my assay take?
We welcome you to view turnaround times here for our standard assays.

Please contact us kinase-screen@dundee.ac.uk to learn more about assays/services not listed.

How much will each service cost?
As each project may involve different activities, or number of compounds, there is no standard price-list.  Rather, we encourage you to contact us if you are trying to identify the best service for your needs.

How do I interpret my data?
The data is portrayed as mean percentage enzyme activity remaining (compared to a DMSO control) and standard deviation for assay duplicates.  The lower the value, the greater the inhibitory effect of your compound.

What is a Z’ Value?
The Z’ factor is a coefficient which reflects both the signal range seen in an assay and the data variation within it.  It is used to compare and assess the quality of assays in HTS and is a good way to evaluate the assay performance.  Our assays must  generate acceptable Z’ values (Quality Control), in order to pass our QC.

The Z-factor is defined in terms of four parameters: the means and standard deviations of both the positive (p) and negative (n) controls (µp, σp, and µn, σn). Given these values, the Z-factor is defined as:

                      3(σp+σn)

Z-factor = 1- ____________

                        (µp-µn)
